Once upon a time, letters were beautiful. From the elegant handwriting to the pretty paper to the details of a wax seal, mail used to be fun and something to treasure.

But then came the bills, the ads, government papers, and taxes. Pretty soon, letter writing wasn’t so popular anymore. People came to dread getting the mail. Who needed snail mail anyway if email and texting were so much faster?

The art of fun and beautiful letter writing was soon lost.

----------------------------------------

While that tale was rather exaggerated, it does has some truth. In our modern culture of the internet with access to emailing, texting, instant messaging and social media, the art of letter writing has fallen to the back burner.

Letter writing is one of the oldest forms of communication. It connected you in a real, unique and special way to the person you were distant from. While writing letters took time, it made you value the letters all the more. From stories to news, to family updates, life was shared in the form of letter writing. And that has all been lost… until now.

It’s time to get back meaningful distant communication! Call it old fashion, but I think receiving a letter from a faraway friend would be one of the most special things in the world!

More than that, with the recent increase in the price of stamps and with the sudden comeback in the art of hand lettering and calligraphy, it is high time to make mail fun again!

Here are five ways to make letters fun again!

1. Write by hand

It may be so tempting to just open up Google Docs, type out a letter and then print it out, but I beg you to reconsider (and don’t give the excuse that you have terrible handwriting. The more you practice, the better it will get!) Writing by hand shows the receiver that you care about them, that you took the time to express your thoughts by hand. It also helps your thoughts and words to flow more concisely when you are using your hand to write.

Plus, there are loads of colorful pens, pencils, and markers that can make your letter look stunning! Some of my favorites are G2 pilot pens and various sizes of Micron pens.

2. Use fun stationery

From store-bought stationery to a couple of stylish cards, finding fun stationery is super easy. There are many places to download free stationery or you can make your own using Canva. Hobby Lobby and Dayspring.com are some of my favorite place for finding just the right cards for any occasion. You can even purchase a couple of postcards about your state to send to a faraway friend.

3. Include small surprises

Nothing is more fun than opening a letter that has a small surprise waiting inside! If you think about it, there are many things that flat that won’t cost you much. Things like stickers, a tea bag, a friendship bracelet, a fun bookmark (my-all time favorite bookmarks, the sprouts!), Prayers to Share by Dayspring, coloring pages, and much more! Be creative!

4. Take time on the address

The address is the first thing they see when they receive the letter, so make a good impression. Write the address in calligraphy or neat hand-lettered font. Write the address around the edge of the entire envelope and put the name in the middle. There are lots of options here to make the address stand out and mean something. (See Pinterest for ideas and tutorials.)

5. Make it beautiful

The decor is key. Try using stickers, washi tape, small sketches, bits of glitter and markers to add the finishing touches to your letter. Even drawing flowers on a simple white sheet of paper will speak volumes of care and beauty. You don't have to be an artist to make your letter beautiful!

I hope these five tips inspire you to write letters and make them fun again! Remember, that it doesn't matter if you have expensive stationary or a simple piece of paper, you can make letter writing beautiful and have fun doing it!
